Stories from Local Government elections in Osun State
The Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) conducted the local government elections across all the 30 local governments of the state of Osun on Saturday, January 27, 2018.
According to our sources, elections in the state were generally peaceful and no violence was recorded. The only issue was that there was a lot of tension few days preceding the election day. In Gbogan and some part of Odeomu for example, some stores and small businesses could not open due to anxiety created by groups who felt marginalized in the electioneering process.
We also got to know that almost all the candidates of the ruling party, the All Progressive Congress (APC) were unopposed at the ballot. This is because the major opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) decided to boycott the elections leaving the smaller parties as major contenders. It was also gathered that elections didn’t hold in many wards especially in Osun West district.
There were also instances where some parties were not on the ballot box. The councillorship candidate of KOWA party in Ward 10, Ilesha East LGA, Jude Feranmi issued a statement on his official twitter handle @JudeFeranmi.
“KOWA is not on the ballot in my ward today. I have had to explain this unfortunate situation to friends, donors and supporters. If anything, I have learned one way Nigeria’s dysfunctional system keeps better minds out”. Jude Tweeted with a link to his official press statement.
Another revelation in this election was that many of the candidates from the ruling party (APC) who ran unopposed were young people between 20 to 30 years old except in some instances where older candidates were fielded. This is a good development especially now that more young people are being encouraged to participate in active politics.
While we celebrate this, it is also very important that these young people have the right orientation, training and coaching on the onus of governance in grass roots.
